COST stands for four ideas that are short enough to repeat in a hallway and clear enough to use in a meeting:
- Clarity — people know what matters, what done means, and who owns the next step.
- Ownership — someone is responsible for moving the work forward, with the authority and access to actually do it.
- Systems — the steps, tools, habits, and handoffs that shape how work gets done. When the same problem repeats, the system needs to change, not just the person.
- Trust — people can tell the truth without fear of being attacked or shamed. Bad news arrives early enough to act on.
Why these four
Good leadership is not about sounding smart. It is not about control. It is not about being the loudest person in the room.
Good leadership helps people do good work with less confusion and less fear. Clarity and systems remove the confusion. Trust and ownership remove the fear and put a name on the work.
What we are building
A high-trust, high-accountability company.
- High trust means people can speak honestly, ask questions, and raise problems early. They do not have to hide risk to protect themselves.
- High accountability means promises matter, deadlines matter, quality matters, and follow-through matters. If something is at risk, we say so early.
You need both, because each one fails on its own:
- Trust without accountability becomes soft chaos — everyone is nice and nothing ships.
- Accountability without trust becomes fear — people hit numbers by hiding problems until they explode.
The goal is care and standards at the same time. Hold people to a high bar and make it safe to tell you the truth about how it is going.
The one line to remember
We lead by creating clarity, earning trust, owning outcomes, and improving systems.
Everything else in this path — the principles, the working rules, the templates — is just a more detailed way of doing those four things on real work.
