Outcome Brief

Use before starting important work.

Use this before starting important work.

Clear goals prevent wasted effort. The Outcome Brief forces you to answer the questions that, when skipped, cause re-work later: what does done mean, who owns the next step, and what could go wrong.

When to use it

  • Before kicking off a project of any meaningful size.
  • Before assigning a task that will take more than a few days.
  • Whenever a piece of work has more than two people involved.

How to use it

  1. Fill in the form below with the requester and the owner together.
  2. Copy or download the result and paste it into your project tool of choice (Slack, Teams, a doc, your project tracker).
  3. Keep it visible. The brief is a living reference, not paperwork.

What good looks like

A good Outcome Brief is short. If it gets long, the goal is probably still vague.

About this form

The form runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded. “Copy as Markdown” puts the filled template on your clipboard so you can paste it into Slack, Teams, email, or a doc. “Download .md” saves a plain-text Markdown file to your computer. “Email a copy” opens your default mail program with the filled template pre-pasted into the message body.
